Can gum disease be treated?

In most people the treatment aims to
prevent the disease from getting worse and cannot reliably replace the bone support your teeth have already lost. Early intervention will improve the success of any treatment.
Treatment is based on controlling the bacteria growth on the teeth and below the gum line. It can comprise of one or more of the following.
  • Plaque control advice
  • Non-surgical debridement
  • Periodontal surgery
  • Regenerative surgery
  • Mucogingival surgery
  • Crown lengthening surgery
  • Root resections or hemisections
  • Crowns and bridges
  • Extractions in severe cases.
